I had a magical experience the other night. Instead of getting right to work on this email as I normally do after dinner on Tuesdays, Spirit gave me a nudge to go to the beach. I love being at the beach as the sun goes down. It is my absolute favorite time to be there. The heat of the day has passed and there usually aren’t a lot of people around. I hadn’t been there at this time in a while, so I decided to act on the impulse. I’m so glad I did! The Florida sky was about to put on another spectacular light show while teaching me about the power of intention.
When I arrived, the sky was a beautiful pale blue scattered with puffy white and gray clouds. A soft sea breeze greeted me as I placed my beach blanket a short distance from a sea turtle nest. I wanted to share energy with the new life forming in the sand below. Sitting next to the nest watching and listening to the ebb and flow of the waves brought me to a place of deep peace and contentment. Those silvery, shimmering waves and the soothing breeze carried my cares away. I was fully present in the moment watching a dog frolic in the surf with her human counterpart. Several minutes passed before I noticed that the dog was missing her right hind leg. Not having that leg didn’t seem to slow her down one bit. It was very inspiring to see her pay no attention to her challenge, and focus only on the ball being thrown for her. It reminded me of a beautiful passage I read this week in A Course in Miracles that really struck a chord with me. It was in a section called “Setting the Goal” in Chapter 17.
The value of deciding in advance what you want to happen is simply that you will perceive the situation as a means to make it happen. You will therefore make every effort to overlook what interferes with the accomplishment of your objective, and concentrate on everything that helps you meet it.
This is exactly what that dog was doing. Her goal was to get that ball, and she overlooked any of the obstacles in her way. The power of intention is not a new concept. Wayne Dyer wrote a whole book about it. But this perspective from the Course hit home for me in a new way. It’s not just about manifesting what I want in the physical world. If my goal is to have a peaceful day, then I will seek out experiences that support that and avoid experiences that don’t. I will also be open to nudges from Spirit telling me to go to the beach instead of worrying about not having time to write my weekly email.
As I watched that dog play, the sun dropped closer to the horizon behind me. The pale blue sky shifted into an indigo color, and the clouds became a dark gray. All of a sudden the shifting light patterns formed a huge V in the sky directly in front of me. Indigo turned to dark purple, and bold pinks started to seep in on either side of the V. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was witnessing a living kaleidoscope. Eventually, the sky darkened and the V disappeared, but Mother Nature wasn’t done yet. The spectacular light show concluded with sporadic bursts of lightning illuminating a huge cloud formation way off shore. I’m taking a deep breath just reliving the experience. I set my goal that day to experience peace, and that is exactly the experience I had.
