I have a new respect for Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, the Missouri couple who founded the Unity Movement in the late 1800s. I learned a lot about them and the beginnings of Unity this past weekend at the headquarters in Unity Village near Kansas City. I went there to attend a retreat with a group of beautiful souls from Unity of Houston. I knew I would have a wonderful time, but I had no idea how deeply moved I would be just being on the property. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the power of the prayers that have been emanating from those holy grounds for almost 100 years. Prayer is the foundation of Unity.

As the Unity Movement grew, in 1929 the Fillmores purchased a farm outside Kansas City to grow produce for their vegetarian restaurant in town and to provide a space for their employees to commune with nature. That original farm is now Unity Village, a 1,200-acre campus with several chapels, a hotel and conference center, a bookstore and coffee shop, a tower, and administration buildings that surround a gorgeous set of fountains in the center courtyard. One could spend a lot of time just taking in the beauty of that courtyard while listening to the gentle sound of water trickling out of the fountains. As if that weren’t enough, there is a nature walk, two lakes, and a labyrinth on campus too.

Unity Village is also the home of Silent Unity, an organization that offers prayer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In 1890, one year after they published the first issue of Modern Thought magazine, the first Unity publication that shared their teachings on affirmative prayer, Charles and Myrtle began a prayer group. Out of that prayer group created 128 years ago, Silent Unity was born. We were privileged to have a guided tour of their current facility where prayer associates respond to calls, letters, emails, and other electronic prayer requests. It boggles the mind to know they receive about 2 million prayer requests per year. I was not surprised to learn the heaviest volume of prayer requests comes right before the holidays, as well as around the first of the month when mortgage and rent payments are due. The tour guide also shared that many people call on Thanksgiving Day just to thank them for the service they provide. What a great idea! The loving energy in that building is palpable. After just a few minutes of being in there, my heart was so full that my eyes started leaking.

In addition to the call center, there is a training room and a little chapel on the top floor of this building. In the little chapel, prayer associates take thirty-minute shifts to sit in silence and hold the high watch for all those requesting prayer. Our group was given the unique opportunity to join that 24/7 prayer vigil by signing up for a shift during our free time. What an honor it was to be in that room lending my heart energy and good thoughts to that continuous flow of prayer that has been uninterrupted for over 100 years. “Peace…Be Still.” is painted on the front wall of this magical little room, and indeed there was incredible peace in that stillness. I came out of there glowing like the full moon on a calm, cloudless night.

This sacred space that Charles and Myrtle had the vision to create was the perfect container for our retreat. It allowed all of the participants to go deep very quickly. Because of the safe, loving energy we felt, there was an incredible willingness to be vulnerable when people were sharing. The abundance of heart connections made at this retreat was a joy to witness. The energy flowed from one event or experience to the next and everything seemed to fit together perfectly. Yes, there is power in prayer and unity. Those are the right ingredients for miracles, and I feel blessed to have been a part of it.

If you feel like you could use some prayer, visit SilentUnity.org or call 1-800-NOW-PRAY to speak with a prayer associate any time of day. I would also be honored to hold the high watch with you during a session or series of sessions of Life Coaching. I often end my sessions with a short guided visualization or prayer if that feels right for my client. Family Constellations is another great tool based on the power of love and unity to help you get unstuck from whatever is preventing you from living a happy, healthy, prosperous life. All sessions can be done in person, by phone, or via Skype. Please look around my website for more information or send me an email to schedule a session.

Until next time, may you feel the power of love that I felt at Unity Village enfolding you now.
