Magic and Miracles

I experienced many magical miracles at Disney World this past week. It never ceases to amaze me what happens when I set my intention to be the presence of joy and also to be a conduit extending joy out to the world from there. My friend and I had so much fun with our server at lunch at the Disney Hollywood Studios that she gifted us a FastPass for the ride of our choice at that park. After lunch we bypassed the two hour wait for the Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster and were twisting and turning at high speed in less than fifteen minutes.

Later in the week, another miracle happened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as we were heading to the Lion King show. It was scheduled to begin in fifteen minutes and my friend asked if I thought we would get in to this performance or would we have to wait for the next one. I told him I was confident we would make it for this show. Not ten seconds later Ruby, a friendly cast member working outside the theater, asked how many were in our party and if we would like to sit in the front row. We most certainly would! My friend thought I knew this woman because I worked at Disney many years ago. No, we simply were in the right place at the right time. More importantly, we were in the right frame of mind and open to miracles.

A miracle is nothing more than a shift in perception from fear to love. If we had been running in panic to get to the show, or not taken time to get a snack for fear of missing it, we most likely would have missed Ruby and that gem of an opportunity. Because we trusted that all would be well no matter what the outcome, that left room for a miracle. That is what I call being in a miracle ready state of mind. Fear and worry are terrible conditions to grow miracles, but peace and joy are fertile soil for an abundant garden of them.

Speaking of gardens, we were having such a good time at dinner at the Garden Grill at EPCOT that Mickey, Pluto, and Dale all gathered at our table to have dessert with us. Chip joined the fun later when he tried to sneak up on me from the upper level of the restaurant. My friend almost jumped out of his skin when he looked over and saw a giant chipmunk reaching over the railing. Chip thought this was hilarious and came down to laugh and take more pictures with us. Being the presence of joy is a sure way to attract more joy to you!

The longest line we waited in was for the Flights of Passage ride in the new Pandora section of Animal Kingdom. That seventy-five minutes flew by because we started talking with the nice couple in front of us. Eventually the three girls in front of them joined our conversation as well. By the time we reached the loading area, the seven of us had become fast friends, so the attractions host let us stay together and ride in the same group. This breathtaking ride puts guests on the back of a dragon-like creature called a banshee flying through the mystical world of Pandora. It is definitely my new favorite ride, and it was even more enjoyable because we got to experience it with our new friends. Before we went our separate ways, I asked if we could get a group photo at the exit. They all enthusiastically agreed. Interestingly enough, I don’t know any of their names, but that’s not important. The seven of us will always be connected by that shared experience of the heart… and that’s a miracle!

The Outside Picture of an Inward Condition

I was finally able to return to Florida on September 17 after Hurricane Irma passed, and thus able to resume my morning walks along the beach. I couldn’t believe the amount of sand that had been displaced by the storm. Huge sand dunes blocked the entrances to the beach and completely covered the sidewalk. For the past four weeks this has made my walks a bit more challenging. There were many stretches along my normal route where I had to climb over a sand dune or walk in the street to get by. With that extreme amount of sand, I wondered if I would ever see the red pavers of the sidewalk again.

It was during this time that my life path also seemed unclear and riddled with obstacles. A lot of question marks popped up after the hurricanes and the Big Sky Retreat. As I’ve written about recently, I struggled for clarity. The path seemed to be hidden with no clear destination in sight. As I kept asking the deeper questions and going within to listen to my heart, more and more truth was revealed. The outline of a destination came into focus and the first few steps towards it were revealed. All the while the City of Fort Lauderdale had crews working diligently to clear the sidewalks and entrances to the beaches. I’m happy to report the monstrous sand dunes are gone and all is clear once again along my route.

I take notice of “coincidences” like this. What I was experiencing in my mind was directly reflected in my physical experience, both before and after the clarity. It reinforces one of my favorite teachings from A Course in Miracles:

The world you see is what you gave it, nothing more than that. But though it is no more than that, it is not less. Therefore, to you it is important. It is the witness to your state of mind, the outside picture of an inward condition.

This week I invite you to be a witness to your inner world as well as your outer world. You might be surprised to observe how often they match up. If there is a lot of chaos and clutter in your mind, you might notice the same is true in your living space. If you are feeling particularly peaceful, you might notice a gentle breeze outside or the people around you at work seem to be quietly minding their own business. The good news is, if you are not happy with your outer world, you have the power to change your inner world one thought at a time.

Could you use some assistance changing those thoughts that are not reflecting what you want to see in your outer world? It would be my great honor to help you experience more peace and joy in your life by sharing some of the tools and techniques that have worked for me. I offer four, six, and eight week Life Coaching programs based on the strong principles of A Course in Miracles and other New Thought teachings. Please look around my website for more information or send me an email with any questions you may have.

Speaking of A Course in Miracles, due to the encouragement of many, I am excited to announce that later this month I will be offering a five week online class called “Create Miracles” using the Zoom platform. This class is for anyone who is interested in the Course and ready to take their spiritual exploration into new territory… all from the comfort of your own home! Maybe you have picked up the book and felt overwhelmed by it. Maybe you’re curious about it because you’ve heard it mentioned by numerous teachers. Maybe it’s been whispering to you from your bookshelf, “Open me.” The Course has a way of finding people in the most miraculous of ways. During our five weeks together I promise we will take the mystery and heaviness out of this big blue book and put the joy and lightness back in it. Be prepared to laugh, be challenged, and have your questions answered in unexpected ways! Please visit JohnHaroldMoore.com/miracles for all the details.

Until next time, may peace be prevalent in both your inner and outer worlds.

The Tiny Messenger

It seems that Spirit is sending me all kinds of messages through the Animal Kingdom lately. Last week it was a squawking seagull. This week I have been visited by a tiny lizard no bigger than my thumb every evening while brushing my teeth. Not to worry. He doesn’t live in my toothbrush holder, but apparently he does live outside my bathroom window on the second floor. Every time I flip the light switch on I suddenly see his underside wiggling across my window. Where he is during the day, I have no idea, but I’m happy for his nightly visit. It makes me smile.

I didn’t looked up “lizard” in my Medicine Cards book right away. This book written by Jamie Sams and David Carson comes with a deck of 52 oracle cards, each with a beautiful illustration of an animal from North or South America. In the pages of the book, the authors share stories and teachings about each animal. I was introduced to this wonderful book at my first spiritual gathering back in 2004. Something about Native American wisdom struck a deep chord with me and still does. I love the way Native Americans see all things as connected and working in harmony. I also love the way they see animals as teachers and messengers from Great Spirit. As a longtime A Course in Miracles student, I also believe Spirit uses many different ways to communicate to us here in the dream. Since I am attuned to observing animals, it is a great way for Spirit to get my attention.

From years of using these cards, I knew that “lizard medicine” is about dreaming, so I didn’t bother to look it up in the book. From what I remembered, if a lizard shows up, it is often a reminder to pay attention to the dreams we have at night or in the early morning hours. They might be trying to tell us something. However, the dreams I’d been having didn’t seem overly significant so I didn’t pay much attention to this message.

That all changed when I decided to try something new on my Instagram account this week. Since I love the Medicine Cards so much, I thought it would be fun to pick one at the beginning of every week and share it and its message on my page. Imagine my surprise when the first card I picked was the Lizard Card! Apparently Spirit really wanted me to read that section in the book. I’m so glad I did. It reminded me that the message of lizard is about more than just our dreams at night. It is also about the dreams we have for our lives. This particular quote from the book spoke to me:

“Lizard medicine is the shadow side of reality where your dreams are reviewed before you decide to manifest them physically.”

This is exactly what I have been doing since I returned from the Big Sky Retreat in Montana. Mary Morrissey was one of the keynote speakers, and one of her favorite questions to ask is, “What would you love?” That question has been haunting me. I thought I knew the answer to it, but lately I haven’t been so sure. It feels like it’s time to take a fresh look at the dreams I have for my life. Sometimes dreams change because we do. Sometimes we dream about something for so long that we lose hope of it ever coming true. Maybe it’s easier to sweep that dream under the carpet where we can’t see it, or put it way up on the top shelf of a very tall cabinet where we can’t reach it. I think that little lizard was trying to tell me to take my dream off that high shelf, dust it off, and look at it again in the light. What aspects of it still live in my heart? What parts no longer feel like a match for who I am or what I love to do? If you’re reading this, maybe that lizard was talking to you too.

For those on Instagram, I invite you to follow me @JohnHaroldMoore. I love creating memes with beautiful photographs and quotes from A Course in Miracles and other teachers I admire. Once in a while I create one with something I find myself saying to my coaching clients all the time. Speaking of coaching, if you could use some assistance dusting off your dreams and taking a fresh look at them, I would be honored to be on your dream team for the next four, six, or eight weeks with one of my Life Coaching programs. I also offer single sessions or private Family Constellations in person, by telephone, or via Skype. Please look around my website for more information about all of these opportunities that can help you live the life of your dreams.

Until next time, be on the lookout for the many ways Spirit is trying to communicate with you. Even the smallest of messengers have great wisdom to share.

The Squawking Seagull

When animals show up around me in nature I pay attention. I absolutely agree with the Native Americans that animals have much to teach us. I love to discover what message from Spirit they may have for me. Sometimes it is a subtle message and sometimes it is impossible to ignore. The seagull I encountered the other day was not going to go unnoticed. He was squawking from the time I arrived at the beach until the time I left thirty minutes later. No, he wasn’t squawking at me. He was squawking at one of his fellow seagulls. He didn’t seem to have a problem with any of the other birds near him. All of his angry vocalization was aimed at one bird in particular. I don’t know what this bird did to upset him. Maybe there was a stolen fish involved. Maybe someone was encroaching on someone else’s territory. Maybe it was a lover’s quarrel. Whatever it was, it happened before I arrived, and the squawking seagull was not going to let it go!

It was actually quite comical to watch. The squawker was relentless, but the other gull didn’t seem phased by it. He continued to stand there and occasionally preen his feathers as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening. It occurred to me that the squawking gull was much like the ego. When it gets upset about something it incessantly squawks at us. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be like the other gull and just ignore it and go about our business? Eventually the quiet gull waded into the ocean and flew away. You’d think that would have made the little squawker happy, but no. He continued to squawk even after the other gull flew away. Isn’t that also just like the ego? It gets what it wants and it’s still not happy!

After a few minutes the bird gradually quieted down. He had successfully rid himself of the cause of his agitation, or did he? How could he tell? Most seagulls bare an uncanny resemblance to each other…at least from my human perspective. Maybe it’s different if you’re a seagull. Not much time passed when it appeared that the same bird had circled back around and landed on the beach a few feet from the noisy one. I wondered if it was indeed the same gull and what would happen if he got closer to Mr. Squawker. Sure enough, as soon as Mr. Squawker spotted him the show started all over again. I couldn’t believe it! I had to snap a photo with my phone to capture the moment.

So what was the message from Spirit? I think it was just a reminder that once the ego latches on to a grievance it can be extremely difficult to let it go. However, if I allow myself to become the observer and see how silly I am acting, laughing at myself might help me release the situation.

Is there something or someone you are having a hard time forgiving? Often the hardest person to forgive is ourself. I would love to assist you in the forgiveness process by sharing some of the tools and techniques that have worked for me. I offer four, six, and eight week Life Coaching packages as well as single sessions custom made for you. All of my sessions are based on the strong principles of A Course in Miracles and other New Thought teachings. Please look around my website for more information or send me an email with any questions you may have.

Family Constellations is another great way to let something go that is preventing you from experiencing more peace in your life. Often it is something you had no idea you were carrying for your ancestors. Join me for an upcoming workshop and experience this amazing process for yourself!

Until next time, if that seagull starts squawking, allow yourself to become the observer and give yourself some space. Eventually it will quiet down or you will see just how silly it is.
